2024 Candidate interviews

2024 Candidate Interviews

The Chamber had the opportunity to interview six candidates running for City Council,  Susie O’Hara (D5), Hector Marin (D2), Joy Schendledecker (D3), Shebreh Kalantari-Johnson (D3), David Tannaci (D1) and Joe Thompson (D5), and ask them a number of questions relevant to the Santa Cruz Business Community. Every candidate expressed an interest in working with the business community and recognized their importance in solving issues in Santa Cruz. Some common themes were a strong support for lowering property prices, for both commercial and residential land, as well using government resources such as unused lots and grants to incentivize more small businesses and housing development. Notably, Kalantari-Johnson cited her agenda that activated alleyways and neglected store fronts, Thompson called for rent control on small businesses, Shendledecker supported altering the requirements for Commercial properties to lower maintenance costs. Furthermore, Marin, O’Hara and Schendledecker all supported increases to the minimum wage. Overall, the candidates are in support of growing Santa Cruz while working with the business community directly to do so.
