Santa Cruz Trolley Ribbon Cutting

The Santa Cruz Area Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Association of Santa Cruz launch replica trolley to take passengers between the beach and downtown Santa Cruz.

The Santa Cruz Area Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Association of Santa Cruz are hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the launch of Santa Cruz's colorful, nearly-new replica trolley in time for the 4th of July holiday weekend. The event will take place on Thursday, June 30th at 5:00 pm at the downtown trolley stop in front of the Del Mar Theatre. There will be a ribbon cutting, free trolley rides, and more. The event is open to the entire Santa Cruz community and visitors to Santa Cruz.

The Santa Cruz Beach Trolley aims to transport tens of thousands of the 3,000,000 people visiting Santa Cruz this summer back-and-forth between the beach and downtown. Modeled on dozens of successful beach-shuttle programs nationwide, the Santa Cruz Beach Trolley operates ten hours per day on a 30-minute round-trip schedule.

The purpose of the trolley program is to better engage visitors in the Santa Cruz experience and let visitors explore Santa Cruz without their cars. The trolley makes it easy for visitors to travel between the beach and downtown Santa Cruz for a meal, a memento, an exploration of the museum, or just a stroll. Monterey’s bus service between downtown and the beach shot up 70% when they switched over to a trolley. Other beach trolley operators from Santa Barbara to Cape Cod keep their trolleys busy throughout the season.

The Santa Cruz Trolley Consortium is a project of the Downtown Association of Santa Cruz and the Santa Cruz Area Chamber of Commerce and is supported through sponsors and volunteer contributions from organizations such as the Santa Cruz Seaside Company, Barry Swenson Builders, Comerica Bank, Hula's Island Grill and Tiki Room, Kianti's Pizza & Pasta Bar, New Leaf Market, Penny Ice Creamery, Red Restaurant and Bar, 515 Kitchen & Cocktails, True Olive Connection, and many more beach and downtown businesses, restaurants, and hotels.

The trolley runs from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM daily from Memorial Day to Labor day with two stops. The downtown stop is in front of the Del Mar Theatre at 1124 Pacific Avenue, Santa Cruz. The trolley leaves the downtown stop on the hour (:00) and at 30 minutes past the hour (:30). The beach stop is near the entrance to the wharf on Beach Street. The trolley leaves the beach stop at 15 minutes past the hour (:15) and 45 minutes past the hour (:45).

The trolley is operated by a professional transit company providing top-quality service and experienced drivers. While the trolley has a 1930s look, it is ADA compliant and operates on cleaner-burning compressed natural gas.

Trolley rides are 25 cents each way, payable in exact change.
