Our goal is to save as many pregnant mares from abusive situations, feed lots, eventual slaughter, and to provide an alternative for owners who cannot care for their pregnant horse to surrender them to our care. It is our mission to provide a safe natural environment for mares to foal in peace, and to nurture and nurse their young. Court Appointed Special Advocates is a Santa Cruz County non-profit that recruits, trains and professionally supervises volunteers who work one-on-one with children in foster care due to parental abuse or neglect. Last year more than 150 volunteer Advocates served nearly 200 children, working with schools, therapists, social workers and the courts. Judges rely on Advocates' recommendations in deciding how to best meet the children's needs until they are in safe, permanent homes. More than 70% of CASA's annual budget comes from fundraising and donations. Since its founding in 1992, CASA has served over 1000 children and trained more than 500 community volunteers.

Companion for Life / Lifeline Project is a nonprofit program for seniors, homebound and the disabled. They provide an emergency response equipment and monitoring on a month to month lease basis. If a subscriber is in trouble, they press the button on a pendant or wristband they wear. Their call for help is relayed to one of three responders selected in advance by the client. Help is on the way, generally within three to five minutes. This is a project of the Emergency Response Systems of Central Coast Counties

Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter (SCCAS) provides animal rescue, regulation and humane care that protect the health, public safety and welfare of people and animals in Santa Cruz County. We currently rescue and assure safe, temporary shelter, veterinary and humane care for approximately 7,000 stray, unwanted, abandoned, mistreated, neglected and injured animals each year. Our shelter also provides 24-hour animal rescue service and is Santa Cruz County’s only full service, open-admission animal shelter. SCCAS provides two locations for owners to find and recover their lost pets and adopt new animal companions.
